Potassium-Rich Foods Help Beat a Hangover

Eat potassium-rich foods the day after drinking. Why? Alcohol acts as a diuretic, which means it increases your urge to go to the bathroom. But urinating very frequently can cause your body to lose the potassium and other electrolytes it needs that are stored in urine. This is what makes you feel super dehydrated! Because potassium is a key nutrient for proper muscle and nerve function, when we pee a lot after drinking, we experience symptoms like headache, fatigue, and nausea. So eat potassium-rich foods the day after a heavy drinking session to help alleviate these symptoms. Because potassium is only one of several important electrolytes, you also want to make sure you replenish sodium and magnesium, and drink plenty of water to rehydrate. Coconut water is a great natural alternative to sports drinks as it provides a lot of potassium and sodium. Just be sure to stick to unsweetened varieties because sugar can aggravate hangover-related stomach aches!

What You'll Need

  • 1 Large Banana contains about 420 mg of potassium
  • Some foods do have even more potassium but a banana is often the easiest to find! Other potassium rich foods include:
  • Half an avocado: 534 mg
  • 1 cup spinach: 839mg (24% DV)
  • 1 medium sweet potato: 952 mg (27% DV)
  • 1 cup coconut water: 600 mg (17% DV)
  • 1 cup kefir or yogurt: 579 mg (15% DV)

What You'll Do

  • Eat potassium rich foods the day after drinking

Tips & Warnings

I love this tip! I've noticed that with age my body can't recover from wine as quickly as it used to, but I'm not quite prepared to give it up. I'm so glad I now know when to up the banana count, and it's helpful to know what else to look for on those low-energy days. Thank you Jessica!
