I suffered from severe acne throughout my teens and well into my early 20's. Socially it caused me great anxiety and as a result I suffered from low self esteem. I tried every possible conventional/natural route from antibiotics to topical creams to rose water sprays, natural face masks, tea tree oil you name it. Our skin is our largest organ and one of its many functions is to rid our body of toxins to help prevent chemical and waste build-up. When our bodies are overloaded with these chemicals, toxins, waste and excess hormones our skin has to work extra hard, especially if our lifestyles don't support it and we suffer from constipation, a yeast overgrowth, hormonal imbalances and eat a poor diet. The best we can do is to correct any imbalances there may be by removing the toxins, lessening our exposure to chemicals, improving our digestion/bowel movements, calming any stress, eating whole unrefined foods, balancing our gut microbes, avoiding sugar, avoiding refined and processed foods, balancing our hormones and healing the gut.

What You'll Need

  • A good healthy lifestyle
  • Organic fruit and vegetables
  • Whole grains such as brown rice, gluten free oats, brown rice pastas
  • Ultimate Flora by Renew Life probiotics
  • Dr Archturus Loosemore herbs
  • Natural beauty products - Neal's Yard are great!

What You'll Do

  • 1. What you put on your body is just as important as what you put into it. Cutting out chemicals decreases your bodies work and toxic load. Switch your everyday products to more natural alternatives, this includes your body wash, facial wash, and moisturiser. aloe vera & hyaluronic acid are great for hydrating facial skin, jojoba oil and an all natural shea butter face cream are great for balancing sebum production.
  • 2. Eat organic foods. Organic foods are grown with less pesticides and chemicals.
  • 3. Only eat grass fed organic meat and wild fish. Farmed fish and meat are pumped full of hormones and antibiotics making acne worse.
  • 4. Balance your hormones by balancing your blood sugar levels. Eat whole unprocessed, unrefined foods and cut out sugars, Low GL fruits like blueberries and apples are fine, but aim for brown rice, plenty of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, quinoa, oats.
  • 5. Cut down on oil. Never use sunflower or vegetable oil that is full of trans fats. Instead cook with coconut oil, grass fed butter/ghee and dress salads with olive oil, sesame seed oil but never heat them.
  • 6. Drink plenty of water 2-3 Litres a day! This helps to flush out any toxins, chemicals and waste build up.
  • 7. Get your bowels moving. You should be going to the toilet AT LEAST once a day. Ideally 2-3 times a day. If you suffer from constipation this contributed to a build up of waste making the toxins have to come out through your skin which can cause acne also. Having a wheat/gluten intolerance can cause constipation so removing these from the diets can make a huge difference. Taking 2 x capsules of Dr Archturus Loosemore herbs is a gentle effective blend of herbs to really help with bowel movement. Eating plenty of soluble fibre also is great so plenty of vegetables and Low GL fruits.
  • 8. Supplement with a good high potency probiotic every morning first thing on an empty stomach. A great brand is Ultimate Flora by Renew Life, take 1 capsule first thing with some water. Acne can be caused by antibiotic use which causes a gut microbial imbalance, killing all good bacteria allowing yeast to thrive. Yeast produces up to 80 known chemicals in the body that overloads the body with more chemicals, toxins and waste. A yeast overgrowth also contributes to hormonal imbalances as well as many other ailments. It can make skin red and inflamed and acne prone. If you think you may suffer from a yeast overgrowth it would be good to see a Nutritional Therapist to undergo a healing protocol to kill the yeast and repair the gut. This is very common and can take a lot of time to heal.
  • 9. Relax :-) stress makes everything worse. Find some time for yourself to Love and nourish yourself. Go for walks, spend time in nature, meditate, breathe, find an exercise and activities or hobbies that you Love, run warm baths with sea salts and essential oils.
  • 10. Stay away from toxic foods, toxic relationships, refined sugars, processed foods, alcohol, tobacco, wheat, gluten, dairy (dairy is full of hormones),
