Fungal nail infections, otherwise medically referred to as onychomycosis, are a common occurrence for many people. Toe nail fungus is said to be more likely to affect people and can be caused by those who wear artificial nails and varnish, have diabetes, suffer from athletes foot or who smoke or spend a lot of time in the water. Beware ladies (and gents), it can also be easily caused and spread via unsterilised nail cutters and infected pedicure equipment.

The infection gets into the nail through surface nail cracks or cuts on the outer skin, creating discoloured yellow streaks and a thick, crumbly, brittle nail that lifts up from the skin. Not an attractive summer look or added feature to debut your new elegant peep-toes!

What's more, nail fungus is contagious – it does not clear up on its own, so it needs immediate attention as it can spread to other areas of the body (!). Luckily, there are some great surprising natural home remedies you can use to treat toenail or nail fungus quickly.

How to get rid of nail fungus fast

Fortunately, Mother Nature has a natural, fab-smelling and effective cure. Powerful plant extracts in the form of essential oils can be used in aromatherapy to treat nail fungus and provide a chemical-free, natural alternative to pricey over the counter synthetic solutions that can be ineffective.

The two best essential oils that naturally and effectively treat nail fungus are:

• Melaleuca oil (tea tree)

• Lavender oil

These two oils are known for their highly effective antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. They can also be applied neat and directly on to skin. Here's how to use aromatherapy to heal fungal nail:

1. Clean the affected area well with soap and water and towel dry.

2. Either apply 1-2 drops (with a cotton bud or eye dropper to get underneath the nail) of Melaleuca (tea tree) and 1-2 drops of Lavender to the nail, and allow to soak into the nail. Leave on and apply daily until the nail has improved. Or, dilute 5 drops of Melaleuca (tea tree) and 5 drops of Lavender to 2 tablespoons of carrier oil such as sweet Almond or Coconut oil. Massage into the affected area and leave on. Apply daily until the nail has improved.
