Thumb sucking is a way for young children to self-soothe and is completely normal, however, it's recommended that children don't continue the habit for long after the age of four as the constant presence of the thumb in the mouth could alter the position of the jaw, misaligning teeth and causing issues with their palette.

What You'll Need

  • New blanket or toy

What You'll Do

  • try to limit the time their suck their thumbs by explaining it is a bedtime or nap time activity.
  • Don't tell them it's wrong though, rather praise them for good behaviour.
  • Ask them why they are sucking their thumb when they are doing it to self soothe, and offer them an alternative like a soft blankie or fluffy toy.
