If you are prone to producing an excess of uric acid, drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to prevent gout attacks. Once symptoms appear, take an Aleve or Advil to reduce pain, elevate the area affected so that it is above the heart and place an ice pack on it for up to twenty minutes (make sure that the ice is not in direct contact with the skin to prevent frostbite). Repeat application of ice pack as needed and drink at least 3 quarts of water a day while symptoms last.

What You'll Need

  • Water, ice pack, and Advil or Aleve

What You'll Do

  • Drink lots of water. Elevate area affected. Release pain and swelling
