- Don't take too much! Because this is not regulated by the FDA, and sold only over the counter, many companies sell it in doses well above what we need for efficacy. The body can build up a tolerance to it and if it is taken in excess, the body will produce less of it on its own. Many companies sell it in 3,5 and 10 mg doses. Two different sleep doctors told me that .9mg or less is all that is needed for most people.
