Though breathing exercises are often recommended to fearful fliers as an effective way to control fear, anxiety, and panic, research shows they don't work. They are a way to focus your attention away from the flight, but a movie or a magazine can do that just as well. Having been told they work, when they don't, an anxious flier might think "nothing works; I'm a failure."
