Control Your Imagination
Anxiety thrives on vividly imagining worst case scenarios of what might happen. These scenarios create more anxiety and can trap you in a cycle of feeling anxious so running more anxious scenarios which creates more anxiety and so on. And whilst you may be able to distract yourself sometimes, in other moments or quieter times, all those emotionally charged thoughts come flooding back. To conquer anxiety, you need to start separating the emotions from the thoughts so they just become thoughts.
What You'll Need
- As soon as you notice yourself starting to imagine worst case scenarios that you don't need to think about, start making those pictures smaller and darker and then even smaller and darker. Imagine sending them into the distance way over there and imagine them to black and white. Once you have drained away the anxiety by making them small, distant, dark and black and white, start to notice that you are only imagining these things (as they aren't going on now) and switch the channel in your mind to focus on something that makes you feel better.
