In women hair loss is less common than in men, however is associated with a great deal of social stigma. One of the most common reasons for this hair loss or thinning is a low level of iron in the blood. Taking regular iron supplements, available from any pharmacy, can cause hair growth and thickening.

Tips & Warnings

  • Iron supplements can cause changes to both faeces consistency and regularity. They can cause the faeces to become dark, almost black, in colour. Don't panic if this happens, this is the body shedding the unneeded iron. It may also cause constipation therefore try to keep hydrated and have regular exercise. Consult your GP or Practice nurse if the constipation is prolonged. Never exceed the recommended dose of iron as per the packaging instructions.
