- Iron supplements can cause changes to both faeces consistency and regularity. They can cause the faeces to become dark, almost black, in colour. Don't panic if this happens, this is the body shedding the unneeded iron. It may also cause constipation therefore try to keep hydrated and have regular exercise. Consult your GP or Practice nurse if the constipation is prolonged. Never exceed the recommended dose of iron as per the packaging instructions.
