By six weeks gestation, blood volume and blood plasma has increased by 50%. This increased demand can further contribute to pre-existing anaemia. Acupuncture is a viable treatment method for anaemia. A study concluded that the use of acupuncture and the application of moxibustion was reported to improve iron levels. Ferritin and haemoglobin levels were measured and used to evaluate the effectiveness of iron supplement therapy alone vs. iron supplement therapy combined with moxibustion. Midwives found that improvements in ferritin and haemoglobin were "too great to attribute to iron therapy alone".
