Using Essential Oils to Boost the Immune System

Essential oils are a hot topic at the moment in the wellness world, and with their plethora of emotional and physical health benefits, it’s no surprise why… One amazing way that we can use these oils is to support our immune system, which is particularly poignant at this time of year as the warmth of the sun becomes a little more infrequent and the chill of winter creeps upon us. There are three main ways that we can use them; 1 Aromatically 2 Topically 3 Internally AROMATICALLY This is the gentlest and most approachable way of using the oils in order to experience profound effects on your overall health and wellness. • Diffuse: You can diffuse an oil in a room to purify the air, or change/ enhance an emotion. Simply put 3 – 10 drops of essential oil per 150ml of water in your diffuser (this will last 2-4 hours). • Smelling: Open a bottle and take a few moments to take a few breaths in and out. • Cupping: Add one drop with 2ml of carrier oil to the palm of your hand, rub together, and take three deep breaths in and out as you cup your hands over your nose. • Spritzers: Create a spritzer of essential oils (oil, emulsifier, distilled water) in a bottle to spray in the air, on clothes, on your skin. • Add a drop to your pillow TOPICALLY Our skin is our largest organ and absorbs a vast quantity of what we put on it straight into our blood stream. Diluting the essential oil in a carrier oil (like fractionated coconut oil, sesame oi, jojoba oil etc.) can help the skin absorb the essential oil more effectively. • Blend a few drops of essential oil with your chosen carrier oil, and massage into the desired area. (NB. Per 10ml of carrier oil it is recommended that adults use 5-9 drops of essential oils and around 1-7 drops for children. Furthermore, you can find dilution charts provided by the essential oil companies, or on expert’s websites such as Dr Eric ) • Apply the blend to the most permeable areas of your body: groin, head, back and front of the neck, chest, stomach, back, arms, fingers, legs and bottoms of the feet. INTERNALLY This is the most controversial usage method. The main reason for this is because there are not many essential oil companies that provide oils safe enough to consume. However, doTERRA is one of the few companies that emphasises quality guarantee through the highest quality plants and highest quality testing. However, if you are choosing to consume these oils you must adhere to proper dilution guidelines. And research whether that particular oil is suitable for ingestion. • Consuming in water: 1 drop of essential oil, 500ml of water, and 1 drop of stevia as emulsifier (optional) • Cooking: 2-3 drops of essential oils per 1tsp of ingredient in original recipe • Carrier oil: Mix oils with coconut oil and consume • Capsules: Add 2-3 drops to an empty veg capsule • Oil pulling: Swill coconut oil around your mouth with 1 drop of essential oil Which specific essential oils support the Immune System? • Frankincense • Oregano • Melaleuca • Geranium • Lime • Rosemary • Clove • Eucalyptus • Lemon • DoTERRA OnGuard, protective blend My personal favourite for immune support is the OnGuard blend, which supports healthy immune function and contains cleansing properties. It is a powerhouse of anti-bacterial and anti-microbial benefits, and when it is diffused it has powerful cleansing properties that purify the air. It also has the added bonus of totally smelling like Christmas! Incorporating this oil into your life protects you against environmental and seasonal threats.

What You'll Do

  • Aromatically: Diffuse 3-4 drops in the diffuser around the house
  • Topically: Dilute 1-2 drops with a carrier oil and apply to the back of your neck, chest and soles of your feet
  • Internally: Add 2 drops to a veggie capsule with your carrier oil of choice/ one drop in a glass of water
  • Practically: Use it to clean surfaces with/ gargle with it/ oil pull with it/ spritz (in water) over cut up apple as a snack/ add to carrier oil for natural hand sanitizer
