What is it? Acid reflux, also known as Gastro-oseophageal reflux disease (GORD) is a common public problem. It is when stomach acid goes up into the oseophagus (where its not supposed to be!). This quite often happens as an outcome of the ring of the stomach muscle (lower esophageal sphincter LES- which usually opens after a meal and then closes). Fails to close appropriately or remains open, even after a meal. Thus allowing the reflux of gastric acid excretions to travel from the stomach into the esophagus. Basically, after a regular meal the LES should close once food has passed by! And this is the reason behind common symptoms such as burning sensations, heat, heart burn. If you experience acid reflux more than twice a week for constantly, it is worth getting it checked by your health care professional. What are the common lifestyle or condition risk factors? 1. Avoid eating large meals before bedtime and especially lying down after a meal. 2-3 hours before minimum. That includes snacking! 2. Asthma 3. Ascites 4. Certain foods usually trigger an attack 5. Stress 6. Coffee especially on an empty stomach (think mornings) 7. Gluten- in celiac or non celiac gluten sensitive 8. Smoking and alcohol consumption. 9. Hiatus hernia (if acid reflux persists, please do check with your GP) 10. If you’re pregnant, speak to your practitioner on practicing meal planning and timing 11. Certain medications may cause acid reflux such as aspirin, blood pressure medications, ibuprofen and muscle relaxants. (It worth speaking to your GP about it)

  • What can I do to feel better? 1. Avoid eating at least 2 to 3 hours before laying down 2. Find ways to relax and schedule “you” time with deep abdominal breaths 5 times 3. Avoiding very hot drinks 4. Avoid eating when stressed- the environment you eat in should not be rushed and stressful 5. Elevating your head with around 2 pillows before bedtime or finding a way to raise your bed 15-20cm under your mattress. The intention is to get your head and chest above your waist to avoid acid coming back up. 6. Wear looser clothing around abdomen and pants 7. Reducing very heavy meals 8. Increase protein (amino acids) in the diet to 0.8-1.2 per kg to safeguard the manufacture of connective tissue Increase fresh fruit (avoiding citrus) and vegetables however chewing carefully is highly recommended
  • 1. Increase dietary fiber as this has been shown to correlate with lower GORD percentages. 2. There is conflicting evidence however, certain nutrients such a zinc and B3, B1 and B6 may support digestion. Pure organic aloe vera juice may reduce inflammation in the stomach (duodenum).
