A TCM way to relieve constipation
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, constipation can be caused either due to excess or deficiency. In TCM, excess refers to heat and a stagnant Qi (the circulating life force in the body); deficiency refers to cold and lack of blood and fluids in the body. it's believed that emotional congestion and worry that has become stuck in the body can cause excess heat, as well as the overconsumption of hot spicy foods and alcohol. Also, irritation and anger can aggravate constipation in this case. The lungs and large intestine are to do with taking in air and letting go of waste. When we are stuck on an emotional level and can't let go, this can translate to being unable to let go physically – therefore a reason why someone can become constipated. The liver is responsible for the free-flowing of Qi, so when emotions become stuck such as from feelings of from depression, aggravation or repression – the person who is trying to keep things 'under control' and 'together' may be going through constipation.

- Try to deal with emotional problems that are are blocking you physically.
- Bone broth and soups
- Herbal teas
- Keep moving gently - making sure you incorporate a daily walk, yoga session in in order to keep the gut moving.
- Keep hydrated and avoid dry foods such as crackers.

- Avoid alcohol, and hot spicy foods in order to relieve constipation.
- After illness or childbirth some people might not have the energy or fluids that are essential for defecation. In this case aim to increase fluids such as water as well as making sure you eat food that will help increase body fluids and nourish, such as bone broth, warm herbal teas, nourishing soups and to avoid dry cold food such as crackers, dried fruit and raw foods.
