Banish the word 'should'
Focusing on what you 'should' have done pulls us into a negative thought cycle where we can become increasingly self critical. We have to realise that we can never change past events and instead focus on more positive thoughts. By turning guilty, negative thoughts into positive ones regularly, we can help ourselves achieve a more positive mindset overall.
What You'll Need
- Mental willpower
What You'll Do
- 1. Notice whenever you are having a thought that has a 'should' in it e.g. I should have met this deadline' or 'I should have gone to x event'
- 2. Realise that this guilt about past events is not something you can change
- 3. Think of something positive you DID do on the same day as the thing you feel guilty about
- 4. Repeat this process of replacing positive thoughts whenever you have a guilty 'should' thought
